Attack
The attack, also known as the spike, is usually the third contact a team makes with the ball. The object of attacking is to handle the ball so that it lands on the opponent's court and cannot be defended. A player makes a series of steps (the "approach"), jumps, and swings at the ball.

A 'bounce' is a slang term for a very hard/loud spike that follows an almost straight trajectory steeply downward into the opponent's court and bounces very high into the air. A "kill" is the slang term for an attack that is not returned by the other team thus resulting in a point.
Contemporary volleyball comprises a number of attacking techniques:
Backcourt (or backrow)/pipe attack: an attack performed by a back row player. The player must jump from behind the 3-meter line before making contact with the ball, but may land in front of the 3-meter line.
Line and Cross-court Shot: refers to whether the ball flies in a straight trajectory parallel to the side lines, or crosses through the court in an angle. A cross-court shot with a very pronounced angle, resulting in the ball landing near the 3-meter line, is called a cut shot.

Off-speed hit: the player does not hit the ball hard, reducing its speed and thus confusing the opponent's defense.

"I apologize to my fellow caddies and professionals for failing to mention Adam's outstanding performance. I would like to thank all those fans at Firestone who made this victory the most special of my career."

Ferrer is in Shanghai
Andy Murray overpowered Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-0 in under an hour Saturday to set up a Shanghai Masters final against David Ferrer.
Ferrer struggled to beat fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3, the third straight match the fifth-ranked player has come back to win after losing the first set.
The fourth-ranked Murray has now won 24 of his last 25 matches and is vying for his third tournament in as many weeks.

Tsonga loses opening match in Shanghai
SHANGHAI - Fourth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga suffered an unexpected defeat in his opening match at the Shanghai Masters on Wednesday when he was beaten 6-7 6-4 6-4 by Japanese Kei Nishikori.
Top seed Rafael Nadal produced a whirlwind opener to beat Spanish compatriot Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3 6-2, while defending champion Andy Murray got a walkover into the third round after his Russian opponent Dmitry Tursunov retired with a thigh injury.
Frenchman Tsonga, still smarting from defeat by Czech Tomas Berdych in the Beijing semi-finals on Saturday, had hoped to pick up points to help him secure one of the eight places in the ATP world tour finals in London next month.
Nishikori, ranked 47th in the world, had other ideas, however, and, despite needing treatment from the trainer, came back from a break down in the third set to beat Tsonga, who started the week ranked eighth.
It was Nishikori's best performance at an ATP World Masters 1000 event and only his second win over a top-10 player in 11 attempts.
"Today my opponent was just better than me," Tsonga said. "I have more points than all my opponents (in the qualifying race) so, of course, for the moment I'm confident. I will take some rest and then I will come back to qualify."

Nadal tied the floundering Garcia-Lopez in knots with thundering forehands and backhand returns.

Mayer made the crucial breakthrough in the seventh game of the second set to lead 4-3, and the Spaniard could not respond, broken again in the final game with the 15th seed taking his first match point.
Earlier, second seed Murray, on a red-hot run of form of 21 wins from 22 matches coming into the clash against the Swiss 13th seed Stanislas Wawrinka, won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 under the roof.
The British player looked set for a straightforward victory after taking the first set but cut a frustrated figure as he conceded a break of serve in the second set as Wawrinka levelled the match with an ace.
Murray raced into a 5-0 lead in the decider as Wawrinka was warned by the umpire after smashing his racket, but despite a late wobble he closed out the match.
"I got myself pumped up right at the beginning of the third set. I think it was important," said Murray. "Stan was playing very well. I was trying to control the ball.
"Especially in the middle of the second set, I was really struggling. I really had to make sure I got my feet moving.

SHANGHAI - Top seed Rafael Nadal was sent crashing out of the Shanghai Masters in a dramatic day of action on Thursday, but defending champion Andy Murray survived a testing encounter to reach the quarterfinals.
World No 2 Nadal lost 7-7 (5), 6-3 to Germany's Florian Mayer, edged out in a first set tiebreak and broken twice in the second set, stunning the crowd at the Qi Zhong stadium.
Mayer made the crucial breakthrough in the seventh game of the second set to lead 4-3, and the Spaniard could not respond, broken again in the final game with the 15th seed taking his first match point.
Earlier, second seed Murray, on a red-hot run of form of 21 wins from 22 matches coming into the clash against the Swiss 13th seed Stanislas Wawrinka, won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 under the roof.

Serving and receiving courts
The players shall serve from, and receive in, their respective right service courts when the server has not scored or has scored an even number of points in that game.
